How do you find the perfect water feature design for your space? No matter the size and scope of your project, it’s always a great idea to pull inspiration from somewhere. Sure you can go online and see an infinite array of beautiful water gardens, but there is something about getting a first hand look.
One of my favorite ways to find inspiration is to visit my local pond shop. Filled with amazing displays and helpful friendly people that share my enthusiasm for backyard ponds. Your local pond shop could be your most valuable resource.
I’m fortunate to have Hahn’s Ponds just a short drive away. Located in Cambria New York I recommend stopping in if you are ever in the area.
Seeing something first hand not only lights a fire inside but also helps you to envision what something may look like in your space.

I had the opportunity to stop by early in the year. Our visit was just before the season began. Getting a sneak peek into what was to come.

Backyard water Feature Options
There is more than one way to bring life to your space to life. The mood elevating sound of trickling or rushing water. Below are just a few examples of how you can bring the element of water into your life.
The Pond
This is a very general description for the water feature this whole website is based on. These come in many shapes and sizes. The main determining factors are space, budget and commitment.
Your local pond outlet should have displays set up so you can get an idea of what will suit your needs. It's always great to get out and see things first hand before you “jump in”.
I am not going to get into the technical stuff here. If you would like more information about the “how to” of building a pond, get our ultimate pond building guide.
As far as design goes, getting out will open you up to new ideas, like how the walkway goes behind this pond in a natural way.
You will also get ideas as to how your pond will be incorporated into your existing space. Like the bistro set placed next to this waterfall. Creates an irresistible ambiance that is hard to beat.
Bubbling Rock
If a pond sounds like too much, maybe something simpler like a bubbling rock. Place it next to your deck or patio. Giving you the soothing sound of gurgling water as it cascades down.
These are a very low maintenance option and perfect if space is an issue.
Container Water Garden
This is exactly as it sounds. Simple and beautiful. A large planter filled with aquatic plants makes a stunning piece.
If you desire, adding a small pump will give this feature some life, but it is not necessary. The plants will keep the water clean and clear. Depending on the size, a small goldfish or two can be added.
This will help with the need to fertilize the aquatic plants. Creating a balanced ecosystem for you to enjoy on your deck, porch, or patio.
Conclusion
The fact is that the possibilities are endless. You are only limited by your imagination.
I encourage you to get out and look around. If there's no local pond store to visit, then get out and take a walk in nature. You are sure to find something to inspire you there.
I’m like a kid in a candy store when I’m here! You may have heard me say this before, be careful this pond stuff is addictive! Until next time enjoy your backyard water garden.
Cheers,
~Jeff
